How an aerobic system works
A conventional septic tank treats wastewater anaerobically, without oxygen. An aerobic treatment unit introduces air, which supports bacteria that break down waste more completely. The result is higher-quality effluent, which is why ATUs can work on sites where a conventional drainfield alone would not, and why they are one of the tools used to reduce nitrogen near the springs.
When an ATU makes sense
- The lot is too small or too wet for a conventional drainfield.
- The soils are poor or restrictive.
- Nitrogen reduction is required, such as in a springs Priority Focus Area.
- A reduced drainfield footprint is needed to fit the site.
Maintenance is required, not optional
Marion County considerations
In a county where the seasonal high water table and springs rules complicate many sites, ATUs are a common answer. If your parcel is inside a Silver Springs or Rainbow Springs Priority Focus Area, an aerobic or other advanced system that meets the nitrogen standard may be required. Our springs and BMAP guide explains where.
What it costs
Florida sources put ATU installation at roughly $10,000 to $20,000, plus maintenance commonly around $200 to $600 per year. See our cost guide for context. These are ranges, not a quote.
